  •  Director Matthew Vaughn hints at plans for a “very, very special movie” with Chris Hemsworth, comparing it to the impact of his film Kick-Ass.
  •  The film, written, directed, and starring Vaughn’s stunt team, aims to reinvent the action movie genre by showcasing stunts and acting simultaneously.
  •  Vaughn’s previous movie, Argylle, received poor reviews, but this upcoming project with Hemsworth and Sam Rockwell offers an opportunity for redemption.

Director Matthew Vaughn hypes his upcoming action movie with Chris Hemsworth. Vaughn is known for his work in the action genre, with his most recent movie being the spy movie Argylle. Best known for playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, Hemsworth’s most recent work includes Extraction IIThor: Love and Thunder, and Spiderhead.

In conversation with Josh Horowitz for his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Vaughn hints at plans for a new action movie with Hemsworth. While Vaughn kept the details of this film vague, he called the project a “very, very special movie” that would have the same sort of impact as Kick-Ass did.”

The movie features Vaughn’s stunt team and is described as “reinventing an action movie.” The cast includes both Hemsworth and Sam Rockwell. Check out the full quote from Vaughn below:

“I’ve been producing a very, very special movie. I’m very excited about it. I just saw a half-an-hour cut together. This will have the same sort of impact as Kick-Ass did. And I can’t talk to much of it yet. You ask Sam Rockwell and he just gives everything away in an interview, we’re like ‘Sam, we’re under contract, you’re not allowed to speak about that.’ And he’s like, ‘What?’ And then… But it is a movie, I can say it is a movie that is written, directed, and starring my stunt team. It is a film like no movie that has ever been made. And it’s also got Chris Hemsworth and Sam Rockwell in it. Plus some other very, very interesting cameos. And it’s reinventing an action movie, because it is a film where it is pretty extraordinary watching these stunt guys as they are acting and doing stunts at the same time, and you’re not having to hide anything.”

Can This Matthew Vaughn Movie Redeem Argylle?

Vaughn’s film career has consisted of a number of acclaimed action works, including Kick-AssKingsman: The Secret Service, and X-Men: First Class. However, his most recent work has not been as successful as those predecessors. Despite boasting an impressive cast of Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, and Rockwell, Argylle is faring quite poorly among critics. It currently holds a Rotten 34% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Argylle was criticized for its lack of coherence and the lackluster nature of its action scenes. At their best, Vaughn’s movies are not the least bit slapdash, but rather include well-drawn and sleek sequences with a visual flare. Working closely with his stunt team for this mystery film, hopefully Vaughn, as a producer, will be able to harness his biggest strength to make a project that is received better than Argylle.

It will also be a chance to redeem Vaughn and Rockwell’s working relationship. The Argylle cast was one of the few elements that seemed to receive some praise from critics, but the overall reception is no doubt a disappointment for the creative team. Rockwell and Vaughn could find better success elsewhere. With a strong vision and stellar co-star in Hemsworth, this Vaughan-produced movie might reach greater heights than the filmmaker’s latest.
