Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, 35, and his wife Elsa Pataky, 42, began construction of their mega-mansion in Byron Bay, New South Wales late last year.

And as the building nears completion, neighbours may be left wondering whether the Hollywood couple had planned to build a fortress rather than an idyllic coastal abode.

In extraordinary photos obtained by Daily Mail Australia, the structure appears to resemble a military stronghold or brutalist shopping mall thanks to its rectangular shape and monolithic, concrete platforms.

The building itself boasts enough space to accommodate every luxury the Hemsworth-Pataky family would desire, including an enormous infinity pool that appears to have already been constructed on the roof.

There will also be plenty of space for the couple’s three children – twin sons Tristan and Sasha, and daughter India Rose – as well as their beloved pet pooches.

A large patch of vegetation next to the home has also been cleared, possibly to make way for a garage space.

It looks like the garrison-inspired dwelling requires some work before the family can move in, given the prevalence of extensive scaffolding and construction materials.

Meanwhile, the internet has gone into a frenzy over the structure, with some comparing it to a shopping centre, hospital, prison and even an airport.
