Deforestation and poaching are a big problem in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the impact it has had on mountain gorillas is beyond measure. This photo, taken in 2012 at a gorilla park there, shows park ranger Patrick Karabaranga offering comfort to this particular gorilla in the midst of grief, following the murder of its mother.
Mr. Karabaranga still works there today, and has taken a number of photos of himself with the other orphaned gorillas:
